Brussels, 23/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The president of the European Commission has said that he supports the setting up of a voluntary contribution from airline passengers as an additional source of development aid. On Friday in a speech at the London School of Economics José Manuel Barroso said that “a contribution of EUR 1, for example, for each passenger would mean a real collective effort by Europeans in support of the fight against poverty, disease and starvation”. He pointed out that the Commission would produce a document in coming weeks on how to provide additional funding of development aid. Up to now, the Commission has analysed different forms of taxation and had ruled out a number of possible sources, although it estimates that a deduction of EUR 10 on intra-Community flights and EUR 30 on extra-Community flights, could raise EUR 6 bn a year (EUROPE 8925).
