There is no “Plan B” in case of political crisis, Mr Barrot warns

Brussels, 19/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - In an interview with Le Monde of 19 May, the European Commissioners for Economic and Monetary Affairs, Joaquin Almunia of Spain, and for Transport, Jacques Barrot of France, warned of the consequences of a French no to the European Constitution. “If the French say no, this will not cause a legal crisis but a political one. There is no “Plan B” for putting an end to a political crisis”, Mr Barrot warned. He added that a French no would serve “as an alibi to those whose over-cautiousness leads them to reject certain forms of European progress. It will not encourage the better-off States to increase their solidarity. It may also block certain major projects, such as Galileo and ITER, for which we have had to combine all our energy”. “The weaker ones will be the main victims of this blockage”, added Mr Almunia, who stressed that “economically speaking, a no would be harmful to economic growth. Today, all the conditions are in place but one: trust. A yes would be a shot in the arm to trust; a no would sap it still further”.
