Brussels, 19/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Eric Gall of Greenpeace, in a press statement, welcomed the fact that the EU food committee had not accepted the European Commission proposals to approve the use in Europe of genetically modified maize for foodstuffs (Monsanto 863). The decision will therefore need to be made at a ministerial level. In a press statement, Greenpeace pointed out that this kind of maize may have had “a significantly negative effect on the health of rats” during publicly controlled experiments. Greenpeace also welcomes the fact that the committee withdrew the vote on the results on the genetically modified maize 1507 produced by Pioneer Hi-Breed from its agenda.
