Brussels, 18/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Canada and the EU started negotiations in Brussels on Monday on a trade and investment enhancement agreement (TIEA), according to a press release from the Canadian foreign ministry, which states that TIEA will no longer be a traditional free-trade agreement based on phasing out customs duty, and will aim to respond to the “new generation” of trade issues: cooperation on rule-making, investment, facilitation of trade, non-tariff obstacles to trade. The framework of the TIEA was approved by Canada and the EU at their Summit of March 2004 (EUROPE 8670). Negotiations will not be concluded until the results of the WTO's Doha Round are known. The EU is Canada's second largest trade and investment partner after the United States.
