Confederation of European paper industries encourages forest certification

Brussels, 18/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - According to the Confederation of European Paper Industries, forest certification contributes to development of sustainable forestry, both economically and environmentally. The CEPI is campaigning in support of this method because it guarantees consumers basic forest products from well managed forests. CEPI underlines that a compromise is needed between preserving the environment and being able to maintain a competitive quality wood market. Marc Herman, water and forestry engineer in the nature and forests Walloon regional division stated, “the European Union has not explicitly expressed its point of view on the subject but has suggested that foresters opt for a certification system as, in effect, it is a method that forms part of the logic of forestry renewal in the line of Natura 2000 (promotion of biodiversity in the EU) and the Habitats directive” protection of natural habitats, fauna and flora in the Community interest). Herman also pointed out that wooden buildings allowed Co2 emissions to be contained and therefore limited the green house effect. CEPI explained that global warming was a problem that had never been so pressing as at present and affected everyone. Info: ww.cepi.org and http://www.forestrycertification.info ).
