18/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - On 17 May during the International Day Against Homophobia, celebrated by 35 countries, Josep Borrell, president of the European Parliament, declared that he was underlining one of the main principles of the European Charter of Fundamental Rights in the European Constitution, the principle of non-discrimination. Mr Borrell pointed out that exactly fifteen years ago the General Assembly of the World Health Organisation eliminated homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses. He deplored the fact that discrimination for reasons of sexual orientation remained a serious problem for millions of people. Borrell emphasised that Parliament was still fighting for equality and the defence of human rights. He affirmed that, “our duty, as an enlarged European Union, is to continue the struggle against moral discrimination and physical violence related to sexual orientation. Such industries must be overcome in all countries by all means”.
