Brussels, 11/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - The Commission has decided to release EUR 28.5 million in humanitarian aid to a million of the poorest Palestinians in the occupied territories and the Lebanon. Aid will come from Echo, the Community's humanitarian office. In the occupied territories is will fund food aid (for 730, 00 people in the West Bank and Gaza), access to drinking water and purifying equipment, temporary jobs (to the 120,000 inhabitants of the West Bank), mobile dispensaries in remote villages, emergency psycho-social support for child victims of violence in the conflict, recreational activities at schools and playgrounds, support for international aid coordination and civil protection action. In the Lebanon, aid to Palestinian refugees to fund nutrition programmes of children under 3, income generating activities, social and health care programmes for the elderly and disabled as well as legal assistance for the 3000 Palestinians whose refugee status has not been recognised.
