Brussels, 11/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Enlargement European Commissioner Olli Rehn will be in Cyprus on Thursday 12 and Friday 13 May to meet leaders and representatives from civil society from the north and south of the island. On the eve of his departure, his spokesperson declared that Commissioner Rehn was “ready to play an active and creative role” to get a solution to the two regulations in Northern Cyprus, which are still blocked at the Council. However, it did highlight the fact that this was not the main objective of his visit. The two regulation proposals involve some of the EUR 259 million in aid for the North and direct trade with the North of the island and the European Union. The Republic of Cyprus is opposed to direct trade, whereas the United Kingdom insists that the two regulations are adopted together. Contacts and discussions could start up in coming weeks, indicated diplomatic sources. Exploratory discussions are soon expected to start at UN HQ to prepare a possible re-start to discussions on reuniting the island.
