Commission congratulates Tony Blair on re-election

Brussels, 09/05/2005 (Agence Europe) - Commission president José Manuel Barroso has congratulated Tony Blair for his re-election last Friday. In a press statement he said that he was “waiting impatiently for the occasion to work together to tackle crucial challenges facing us, particularly during the British presidency of the EU in the second half of the year”, adding, “Our close cooperation is indispensable to the success of the European Union”. The United Kingdom will take over the EU presidency on 1st July until 31 December 2005. Gordon Brown will remain in charge of finance, Jack Straw remains in the post of Foreign Secretary. Douglas Alexander replaces Denis MacShane for European affaires and John Reid (until now Secretary of State for Health) takes over from Geoffrey at Defence.
