52 to 58% of Dutch say “no” - Mr Bot remains confident

Luxembourg, 25/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - “At the time being, it is not certain that the opinion polls are providing an accurate reflection of the situation”, said Dutch foreign minister Bernard Bot, commenting on the breakthrough of the “no” campaign in the Netherlands, in Luxembourg this Monday. “What the French and Dutch governments are doing at the moment is providing correct information (…). We will see that by providing more information, more people will vote yes. People are not stupid. They know what is at stake. They will vote yes”, he continued, in a resolutely upbeat tone. According to a survey published on Monday, 58.2% of Dutch people are opposed to the Constitution. Another survey published the day before shows 52% in opposition from a turnout rate of 32%. The referendum of 1 June is consultative, but the two main parties (CDA and PvdA) have pledged to respect the result, as long as turnout is over 30%.
