Brussels, 25/04/2005 (Agence Europe) - EU Member States now have a method for detecting genetically modified Bt10 Syngenta, which is not authorised in the EU but which can be contained in US maize gluten cargoes and in brewing dregs and could be confused with bt11 (EUROPE 8929). The Common Research Centre of the EU has just validated the scientific detection method provided by the Syngenta reference laboratory, as the request of the Commission. Philippe Tod, spokesperson for Commissioner Markos Kyprianou announced on Monday to the press that the Agriculture Council would be informed of this new. Certification imposed by the EU on imports of maize gluten and brewing dregs form the USA remained in application. Mr Tod added that Syngenta would do all it could to ensure that exports were tested before being exported but that Member States had concerns as well as the means to conducts their own tests.
