THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/cyprus

24/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Cypriot president Tassos Papadopoulos reaffirmed on Wednesday when he returned to the European Council of Brussels that if as planned accession negotiations are opened for the EU on 3 October, turkey has to agree to the protocol extending EU/Turkey customs union to the ten new Member States which joined the European Union, including Cyprus. Reuters also indicated that President Papadopoulos declared that he would not leave it up to the UN to have the last word on reunification of the south and north of the island (occupied by turkey in 1974). Greek Cypriots, as opposed to Turkish Cypriots, rejected the proposals on reunification presented by the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in 2004.
