GENERAL NEWS / (eu) ep/wold bank/spring council

24/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - Spanish socialist Enrique Baron, President of the European Parliament's International Trade Committee, is demanding that Paul Wolfowitz, the USA's candidate for the post of President of the World Bank, participate in a public hearing of the Parliamentary. Pointing out that Mr Wolfowitz had been invited to Brussels by European Commissioner for Development Louis Michel and that the International Trade Committee is currently hearing the candidates for the post of Director General of the WTO, Mr Baron underlined in a communication that Europeans are asking themselves if Wolfowitz, known for “his position in favour of the war, would be compatible with the peaceful tasks and constructive policies of the World Bank. Frankly, at first glance, it is rather akin to Attila the Hun being made Secretary General of the UN”, Mr Baron exclaimed (see EUROPE of yesterday, p.13, on the discussion in the European Council).
