EU welcomes US support for diplomatic solution to nuclear problem

Brussels, 17/03/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday during lunch at the General Affairs/External Relations Council, EU foreign affairs ministers tackled the situation in Iran and focused on EU3 (France, Germany, United Kingdom) negotiations aimed at obtaining an agreement on the Iranian nuclear programme and adopted the following conclusions: “The Council has taken note of the oral report of the High Representative on Iran, including the letter from the High Representative and French, German and British foreign affairs ministers, and has expressed its support for the approach presented by the High Representative. The Council welcomed the support from the international community, particularly the declaration of the Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on 11 March on measures of support for diplomatic efforts”. Addressing the press, the president of the Council, Jean Asselborn explained that, “in the weeks to come, new meetings are planned with the Iranians and we hope that this affair will develop positively…It is important to create a political dynamic. The EU will pursue its negotiations with Iran on a trade agreement as well as on a political document. Negotiations sessions also took place in Tehran over the last couple of days(15-16 March).
