European Commission awards European artists at Midem in Cannes

Brussels, 25/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - At the MIDEM (International Music Market), Ján Figel, European Commissioner for education and culture handed out the “Border Breaker” awards whose debut albums have, according to Billboard Information achieved the highest sales in the European Union outside their country of origin over the year between 1 September 2003 and 31 August 2004. The Border Breakers prizes were awarded to: Katie Melua (United Kingdom) for “Call off the search”; Damien Rice (Ireland) for “O” Wir Sind Helden (Germany) for “Die Reklamation” Corneille (France) for “Parce qu'on vient de loin”; Redrama (Finland) for “ Everyday Soundtrack ”;Ana Johnsson (Sweden) for “The way I am”; Benny Benassi & The Biz (Italy) for “Hypnotica” ; Raveonettes (Denmark) for “Chain gang of love” . This year, to mark the enlargement of the Union in 2004, a special “European Breakthrough” prize was awarded to the Polish group Myslowitz for its album “Korova Mily Bar”. At the event Octavie Modert, Luxembourg Secretary of State for culture, higher education and research announced that he Luxembourg presidency would be organising several meetings on culture during the first half of the year including a seminary on the culture, music and publishing industries, which will take place in collaboration with the European Music Office (EMO) and the Fédération des Editeurs Européens (FEP) on 20-21 April.
