Brussels, 25/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday the Commission will adopt (by written procedure) a series of reports on attaining the Lisbon objectives. They contain the second report on implementing the Broad Economic Policy Guidelines (BEPG) for 2003-05, the joint report on employment 2004-05 and the first joint report on inclusion and social welfare. The document on BEPG examines the performance of the 25 Member States in terms of long term financial sustainability, structural reforms (pensions, labour markets), as well as the application of rules on the internal market. Although Member States have overall made “substantial progress” in certain areas, the report says that a lot remains to be done. Unsurprisingly, it confirms that it is unlikely that the 3% of GDP set by for R&D up to 2010 will be attained. The document illustrates that guidelines previously elaborated were particularly good in six Member States: Belgium, Netherlands Denmark, Finland, Ireland and the United Kingdom.
