Washington supports diplomatic path preferred by Europeans on Iranian dossier

Brussels, 25/01/2005 (Agence Europe) - At the end of his meeting in Washington on Monday with the new American Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw told the BBC that the “United States supports the diplomatic path on the Iranian dossier”. “The question of a military option was not raised today”, he said. This meeting between the head of British diplomacy, who hoped to take the opportunity of his meeting with Ms Rice to try to convince Washington to accept the peaceful solution the Europeans are working on, allowed him to reassure the US that Berlin, Paris and London, on behalf of the EU, are negotiating tirelessly with Teheran on the suspension of its uranium enrichment programme. “The difficulty lies in knowing how to deal with Iran, and how we can be assured that its future nuclear activities will be entirely for peaceful uses and that there is neither the intention nor the possibility to use them to develop nuclear weapons”, said Mr Straw.
