Ukraine is "good example" of EU-US cooperation, senior US official says - George Bush in Europe after investiture

Brussels, 03/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Ukraine is an "example of where the US and EU have good coordinated diplomacy", a senior US official said on Thursday in Brussels. "The United States and Europe have a clear and coordinated message", the same official, who wished to remain anonymous, was pleased to note.

The US official confirmed that George Bush intended to go to Europe shortly after his investiture on 20 January. He explained that he would visit NATO and the EU. He insisted on the US Administration's resolve to cooperate with Europe in combating terrorism, and with regards Iraq or Iran.

On the subject of Iran, the senior US official stressed that the United States welcomed the initiative of France, Great Britain and Germany relating to Teheran's nuclear activity, but remained sceptical about its chances of success. "We are obviously sceptical and I think the Europeans are sceptical", he said. The United States sees this agreement as a "test of Iranian intentions". Washington awaits to see whether the agreement will hold before contemplating direct engagement with Teheran, he explained.
