ECONOMIC INTERPENETRATION / (eu) insurance

The Association Internationale des Sociétés d'Assurance Mutuelle (AISAM) has published a ranking of the largest insurers of the European Union in 2003. According to the figures they collected, of the 80 largest insurers in Europe: -25% are mutual insurers; -9% are controlled by holdings, themselves owned by mutuals; -14% are within the realm of the social economy. The top ten in 2003, by gross premium underwritten, are: 1) AXA (France, 68047 million EUR); 2) ALLIANZ (Germany, 63400 million EUR); 3) GENERALI (Italy, 49603 million EUR); 4) ING (Netherlands, 45519 million EUR); 5) ZURICH (Switzerland, 43203 million EUR); 6) AVIVA (United Kingdom, 27999 million EUR); 7) WINTERTHUR (Switzerland, 22015 million EUR); 8) FORTIS (Belgium/Netherlands, 20817 million EUR); 9) PRUDENTIAL (United Kingdom, 19918 million EUR); 10) AEGON (Netherlands, 19468 million EUR).
