01/12/2004 (Agence Europe) - Archbishop Wolfgang Huber, president of the Council of Evangelical Churches of Germany (EKD), took part on 30 November in a discussion on "The significance of the individual in the knowledge-based economy". The new Commissioner for education and culture Jan Figel and the vice-president of the European Parliament Ingo Friedrich (CSU) also attended this event. Archbishop Huber criticised the too narrow vision of education in the Lisbon strategy, exclaiming that, "I support economic progress but not the economisation of our whole life and thoughts". During his visit to Brussels, Wolfgang Huber also met the presidents of the EPP-ED and PES groups at the European Parliament, Hans-Gert Pöttering and Martin Schulz.
