Javier Solana believes Macedonia is on way to European integration

Brussels, 10/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - After welcoming the failure of the referendum on decentralisation last Sunday in Macedonia, EU High Representative for the CFSP, Javier Solana visited Skopje on Tuesday. After meeting with Macedonian president Branko Crevenkovski, as well as other leaders, Mr Solana, declared that the country was on the way to European integration, notably following the failure of the referendum, which was due to the extremely low turnout (EUROPE 9 November p 7). Quoted by AFP, Mr Solana declared that, "We understand that the majority of Macedonians want to move forward to the future and not back to the past". The Macedonian president called on political leaders and representatives from the different ethnic communities in the country to re-affirm their attachment to the democratic values of Euro-Atlantic integration.
