Brussels, 10/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - Speaking after a conference on employment organised on 9 November by the Dutch Presidency of the EU, Dutch social affairs and employment minister Aart Jan De Geus urged the EU Member States and European social partners to work together to create more and better jobs. On the contents of the EU's new social policy agenda, to be drafted by the Commission in 2005, De Geus said the policy should focus on meeting the Lisbon objectives. This would require worker flexibility, since workers would have to change job quicker and easier, and social institutions would have to be updated, he continued. The minister also recommended granting EU subsidies to the Member States in line with their results in terms of implementing the Lisbon Strategy objectives. He added that there should be fewer, but more detailed targets.
