Mr Schüssel to lead EPP debate on Turkey - Statements by Mr Chirac and Mr Juncker

Brussels, 05/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - The EPP Summit appointed Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel to lead its debate on Turkey. The European Council has not debated Turkey, leaving the subject for its meeting on 17 December when it will discuss the opening of accession negotiations. At a press conference, the French president Jacques Chirac pointed out that he was in favour of Turkish accession to the EU, but bore in mind the possibility that negotiations would not lead to accession. If, at the end of the process, Turkey does not manage to assimilate all the values of the EU, "we will have to find a way of creating a strong link between the European Union and Turkey so that the link is not broken", he said. If Turkey strays off the reform path, or shows too much influence for military power over civilian power, negotiations will stop, if they have started, said Luxembourg's Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker.
