Compromise between five parties to recommend ratification but on certain conditions

Brussels, 03/11/2004 (Agence Europe) - A "national compromise" will be arranged in Denmark to recommend ratification of the European constitution during the referendum in the country. The initiative was made by five political parties that have most of the votes at the Danish parliament. The AFP in Copenhagen indicated that the liberals and conservatives that made up the government coalition reached an agreement with the opposition, the social democrats, radicals and "Socialists of the People" - to recommend "yes" in the referendum. No date has yet has been set for the referendum. Prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen told the press that he welcomed this "historic agreement". The Socialist Party of the People only accepted the agreement on the assurances provided by the other parties, that despite the extension of majority voting in the European constitution, Denmark would keep a veto on social issues and those on the labour market and taxes. Holger K. Nielsen told AFP that they had managed to ensure that this agreement would last as long as the constitution.
