03/11/2004 (Agence Europe) -During the signing of the European Constitution, the environmentalist organisation, Friends of the Earth warned EU leaders, "that their continued failure to reform the Treaty establishing the Euratom Treaty" (signed on 25 March 1957 like the EEC treaty), "is putting overall ratification of the new agreement in jeopardy". In a press statement, Mark Johnston said that, "The constitution of the Union cannot continue to be based towards a dangerous and discredited technology such as nuclear". The WWW, on the contrary, welcomed the constitution and the director of its European office Tony Long pointed to the inclusion of "binding" commitments in support of the environment and sustainable development. The WWF did, however, criticise the constitution because it still contained, "unchanged old wording from previous treaties in crucial policy areas like agriculture and fisheries".
