30/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - On 30 September - 1 October in Istanbul, the Council of Europe is organising a regional conference on "Migrants in transit countries: sharing the responsibilities for management and protection". The conference was inaugurated by the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe Maud de Boer-Buqicchi and the Turkish minister of the interior Abdulkadir Aksu and aims to detect migratory transit phenomena better as well as examine the situation of people in transit, particularly in the context of protecting human rights and the dignity of the individual. Political leaders and experts from throughout Europe, but also from Africa and Asia, representatives from government and NGOs and trades unions used the event to exchange experiences on the subject.
