Brussels, 20/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Saturday, the International Atomic Energy Agency adopted a resolution calling upon Iran to clarify "imperatively", before 25 November, the issues in suspense on its nuclear programme. In other words, carry out a complete examination of this programme as the IAEA has called for, and which Teheran has agreed to. But the resolution also calls upon Iran to stop its activities- although legal- in uranium enrichment, as the United States suspects that this is being used for military ends. This resolution was presented by Germany, France and the United Kingdom and supported by the Americans, who would have preferred an ultimatum to bring the case immediately before the UN Security Council with a view to international sanctions. On Monday, the EU called upon Teheran to come in line with the resolution: "The EU (...) calls upon Iran to follow the resolution of the Board [of the IAEA], especially concerning the need (...) to fully suspend all activities related to the enriching [of uranium]", said the leader of the Dutch mission at a meeting of IAEA members, speaking on behalf of the EU.
