Brussels, 10/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has given the go-ahead to plans of Portuguese electricity company Electricidade de Portugal (EDF) to take exclusive control of Spanish public services company Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico. Currently controlled jointly by EDP and EnBW, a branch of EDF, and CajAstur, Hidrocantábrico is the fourth-largest producer and retailer of electricity in Spain after Endesa, Iberdrola and Unión Fenosa. It also distributes and supplies gas and telecommunications services in northern Spain. EDP is Portugal's main producer and distributor of electricity. The Commission noted that even though both EDP and Hidrocantábrico are active on the electricity market, they mainly or exclusively operate on two different national markets, Portugal and Spain, so their activities do not overlap.
