Jacques Barrot says unworkable legislation will be weeded out

Berlin, 10/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - At the same time as the EPP-ED group's summer university in Berlin (see other articles), the CDU President Angela Markel said in a speech to the Reichstag on Thursday evening that there should be greater subsidiarity in the EU, adding that EU legislation could easily be halved. Asked about this in Berlin on Friday, the Cohesion and Regional Policy Commissioner (Commissioner designate for Transport) Jacques Barrot said the Dutch Presidency of the Council of the EU was very keen on this, adding that we cannot continue to let our Directorate Generals produce new legislation before current legislation is respected. Loyola de Palacio told me that regulation is not always followed through in practice, he added (referring to the previous Transport Commissioner). Barrot said he would be weeding out regulations that were not applied or unworkable.
