Commission seminar in Louvain - Jacques Barrot calls for good cooperation-based communications

Berlin, 10/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - Yes, there is a communications problem at the European Commission, and the Commission will be organising a seminar in Louvain to discuss the issue, said Jacques Barrot, responsible for regional policy and cohesion in the Prodi Commission (Vice-President and Commissioner designate for transport in the Barroso Commission) at the roundtable in Berlin on Friday organised by the European Parliament's EPP-ED group, in response to a reporter's comments that during his recent visit to Turkey, Commissioner Verheugen had unveiled the results of the Commission's study of whether to open accession negotiations with Turkey. I don't want to criticise a colleague, and should myself ensure I keep colleagues informed about matters I am responsible for, said Barrot, but added that we cannot reinforce cooperation among colleagues at the College of Commissioners while at the same time letting Commissioners produce their own news. He said good cooperation-based communications were required and the Commission's representations in Member States had to be more like communication and dialogue bureaus than simple information points.
