Brussels, 01/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The chairperson of the European Parliament's Committee on Development, Luisa Morgantini (GUE/NGL, Italy), is to head a delegation of MEPs who will be in Darfur, Khartoum and Chad from 2 to 7 September. The delegation is formed by Glenys Kinnock and Ana Maria Gomes (PES, Britain and Portugal), Fiona Jane Hall (ALDE, Britain), Jana Hybaskova (EPP-ED, Czech Republic) and Emma Bonino (Non-Attached, Italy).
Speaking before the development committee, Costanza Adinolfi, Director of the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), said she hoped the visit by MEPs would enhance public awareness of an increasingly dramatic situation which is, however, eclipsed by other crises. (See EUROPE of 30 July, p.4, on the subject of the hearing of Sudanese Ambassador Ali Youssef Ahmid before the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs).
