Commission to lift last specific controls on Brazilian poultry

Brussels, 01/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission has just lifted the last veterinary controls applicable since October 2002 on Brazilian poultry and poultry-based products. At the time, the presence of nitrofurans were detected in the poultry from the country. Systematic inspections of poultry and poultry based products were set up as a result. On the basis of the results of these inspections and guarantees by the Brazilian government, the Commission has decided to bring the level of testing down from 100% to 80% on suspect imports. No presence of nitrofurans has been detected since by the EU's early warning system and the Commission has therefore decided that no particular measures on these products are now justified.
