Brussels, 01/09/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday the European Commission indicated to the parliamentary committee on fishing that it was prepared to deepen the debate on fish resource management measures in the Mediterranean. However, it still does not intend to withdraw its controversial proposal. the European Parliament, which threw this proposal out last April (EUROPE 2 April 2004 p 9) is now in a dead-end, observed fishing committee president, Philippe Morillon (EPP-ED, France). The latter stressed that the institutions were in danger of losing time if parliament had to begin its work at the level of the initial proposal, which had already been rejected. This explains the European Commission's desire to discuss what can be done with Member States and EP in the waters of this region.
