Brussels, 07/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of the meeting of the Social Troika with representatives of European social partners on Thursday 8 July in Maastricht (see EUROPE of 6 July, p.12), the secretary general of the European Centre of Enterprises with Public Participation and of Enterprises of General Economic Interest (CEEP), Rainier Plassmann, will insist that, to adapt to change in order to bring Social Europe in tune with the aims of Lisbon Strategy, "the management of this change" is needed as a major priority. One must meet the challenge presented by the ageing population, Rainer Plassmann states. This means sustainable pension systems, new kinds of contract and more effective working hour organisation. This is why the secretary general of CEEP will insist that a solution be found for reviewing the directive on working hours under Dutch EU presidency. The second challenge to be met, according to Rainer Plassmann, is the setting in place of an adequate action base for CEEP members in an enlarged Union where the new members must face up to vast restructuring. They need well-functioning infrastructures as well as skilled personnel able to operate in the field of provision of services. Finally, the best way to raise these challenges remains, for Rainer Plassmann, social dialogue at regional, national and European level, which could develop thanks to the new social agenda 2006-2010.
