Technical discussions ahead of 19 July negotiations

Brussels, 07/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - The negotiators of the European Union and Mercosur (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay) met on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss rules of origin, the recognition of appellations of origin for wines and spirits, phyto-sanitary rules and anti-dumping measures. The next "global" round of the negotiations on the association and free trade agreement will take place in Brussels from 19 to 23 July. Negotiators on both sides rmain reasonably confident on the chances of concluding the negotiations in October, as was supposed to happen at the Guadalajara Summit at the end of May. The EU is still waiting for Mercosur's offer on public procurement and an improved offer on services. Mercosur feels that European agricultural opening, with quotas for sensitive products, is insufficient (see EUROPE of 30 June p.10).
