Brussels, 07/07/2004 (Agence Europe) - The Bureau of the future "Alliance of Democrats and Liberals for Europe" has unanimously decided to support (on Wednesday in Brussels) the candidacy of former Polish minister for foreign affairs Bronislaw Geremek at the presidency of the European Parliament.
Geremek declared that, "the fact that a former dissident active for fifteen years in the transformation of his country represented one of the ten countries that joined the Union two months ago appears to me to have a symbolic value that is above party politics". The head of European Liberals Graham Watson said that the candidacy clearly showed that Liberals and Democrats, as well as voters rejected the backroom agreements that threatened to neutralise the political life of the European Parliament.
