Brussels, 08/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - The consortium of Italian Parmesan cheese producers has obtained a small victory in its fight against the abusive use of Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) of "Parmigiano Reggiano". Following discussions with the "Consorzio del Formaggio P armigiano Reggiano", Spanish company "Campofrio" has agreed to end its using the PDO in is sales of certain sausages, at the end of this year. In a press statement published on Tuesday, the Parmesan producers consortium interpreted this as "an important victory" in the context of European Commission infringement proceedings launched against Germany with regard to abusive use of "Parmigiano Reggiano" PDO. On 7 April, the Commission sent a reasoned opinion to Germany, in the last stage of taking the matter to the Court of Justice. Germany has two months to respond to the reasoned opinion (towards the beginning of this month) but appears to be sticking to its position. With the exception of recurrent problems with Germany, the "Consorzio del Foramggio Parmigiano reggiano" explained to EUROPE that it was negotiating other friendly agreements with a company in the United Kingdom and two Spanish companies.
