08/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - On the sidelines of the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg, the three Benelux countries signed a Treaty reinforcing and organising cross-border police interventions. This Treaty lays down details on forms of cross-border police intervention on a daily basis, said the Luxembourg minister for the Interior, Luc Frieden. The Treaty sets the modalities for urgent police intervention such as for specific events, such as the future Luxembourg Presidency of the EU, during the second half of 2005, states a press release by Luxembourg's Ministry of Justice. The declaration, which was signed by the three countries plus Germany and Austria on 28 May, focussed on exchanges of information. European Commissioner Antonio Vitorino, who was already less than enthusiastic about the G5 between the Spanish, French, German, Italian and British Ministers of the Interior, has criticised the initiative of this other set of five countries, calling on the Member States not to act out of synchronisation (EUROPE of 3 June, p.17).
