Brussels, 08/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - Javier Solana, the High Representative of the EU for CFSP, has criticised the slow process of the reconstruction of public buildings and homes destroyed in recent inter-ethnic violence in Kosovo, after a visit to the Province on Monday. During this visit, Mr Solana repeated this message to all the leaders he met, including the President of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, Prime Minister Bajram Rexhepi and the President of the Assembly, Nexhar Daci. Welcoming work already started, Javier Solana criticised the slow pace of work being carried out. The High Representative was particularly shocked by the destruction of a school, and hoped that it would be rebuilt by September (whilst recognising that this is the responsibility of the leaders of the Province). Reconstruction efforts must not revolve solely around houses, said Mr Solana, who feels that it is absolutely vital that Community life be rebuilt, so that the inhabitants of Kosovo feel safe once again. Strongly condemning the recent murder of a young Serb (yesterday's EUROPE, p.4), Mr Solana called upon Serbian political leaders to take an active role in the political process underway in the Province, and upon the Albanian leaders to do all in their power to help the integration of Serbs.
