Commission proposes to negotiate new regime at WTO on banana imports, based solely on tariffs and keeping ACP preferences

Brussels, 02/06/2004 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday, the Commission proposed to the Council to open negotiations at the WTO, with a view to replacing the current (quota-based) import regime for bananas with an exclusively tariff-based regime no later than 1 January 2006 (EUROPE of 29 May, p.14). This kind of decision in principle had been taken by the EU in arrangements concluded in 2001 with the US and Ecuador, after the current regime was criticised by the WTO.
