Supporting review of tourist policies

Brussels, 29/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the opinion by Spanish Liberal Martin Menis (President of the Canary Island region) on the guidelines for sustainable European tourism, the Committee of the Regions (CoR) deplores the fact that the Agenda 21 process for European tourism is currently on the back shelf among administrative, political, social and company concerns in many regions and tourist destinations. In order to effectively promote sustainable tourism, the CoR supports the Commission proposal to create a group for sustainable tourism composed of representatives of national, regional and local public authorities, tourism companies, trade unions and the civil society. On the other hand, the CoR does not consider it appropriate to launch sustainability awareness campaigns. The analyses on the advantages and disadvantages of tourist products are still too recent. This, the CoR concludes, could create tension between the different regions and destinations considered as more or less sustainable.
