THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/constitution/italy

20/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - In reply to Romano Prodi, who wrote to him (and to Silvio Berlusconi) to emphasise the need for national unity on Iraq, following the killing of an Italian, the President of the Italian Republic, Carlo Azeglio Ciampi also stressed greater unity in his letter, not just in Italy, but also throughout the international community, starting with the European Union. According to President Ciampi, what is required is: firstly, the approval of the European Constitution, "an essential stage in reinforcing internal cohesion, relaunching the process of integration and ensuring the necessary governability"; kicking off a renewed European foreign and security policy, before the Constitution enters into force, in order, in particular, to make Union actions at the UN more coherent and effective; reinforcing co-operation between European institutions to make the fight against terrorism more effective.
