Parliament calls for resolution to Darfour conflict

Strasbourg, 05/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - By adopting a resolution from the development committee on Sudan last week, the European Parliament is calling for the halt to the ethnic cleansing campaign by the government in the Darfour region and unlimited humanitarian access to people in danger in the region. It is calling on the Commission and Member States to closely follow the situation in the region. Parliament has strongly criticised the provision of financial, logistic or other support to the Janjaweed militia by the Sudanese government, particularly the blanket bombing of civilians on 8 and 12 March. It is calling on the government to stop all aid to this militia and take necessary measures to dismantle the militia and halt attacks on civilians. It is also calling for a no-fly zone to be set up immediately above Darfour under United Nations control. It is calling for the Sudanese government to keep all aircraft grounded without delay.
