Brussels, 05/04/2004 (Agence Europe) - As we previously indicated, the European Parliament threw out the European Commission proposal last Thursday which insisted on management measures on fishing resources in the Mediterranean. The plenary therefore followed the line of rapporteur Giorgio Lisi (Forza Italia) and called on the European Commission to present a new proposal at its earliest convenience, which better reflects the expectations of those concerned. Commissioner Margot Wallström indicated that the Commission would not be withdrawing its proposal, contrary to affirmations made by MEPs that this had been suggested in discussions with the sector. The Commission claims that the proposal provides flexibility for Member States' stock management measures and will allow disastrous socio-economic consequences for fishermen in the Mediterranean to be avoided. Lisi concluded by pointing out that the dossier had been referred to the parliamentary fisheries committee.
