THE DAY IN POLITICS / (eu) eu/commission

16/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - The former Finnish Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen (Social Democrat) said on Saturday, according to Reuters, that he would be interested in becoming the President of the European Commission. During a meeting in Prague, Mr Lipponen said that the Finnish government would take a decision on this in June. Reuters points out that according to the President of the European Council, Bertie Ahern, the European Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs, Portuguese Socialist Antonio Vitorino would be a very good candidate to take over from Mr Prodi, but that it would doubtless be difficult to agree unanimously, because of his "leftist" politics.
