Brussels, 03/02/2004 (Agence Europe) - Questioned by La Stampa on Tuesday on the Franco-German-British summit on 18 February in Berlin (not only will Jacques Chirac, Tony Blair and Gerhard Schröder be taking part but also their foreign affairs, economics and finance ministers), the Italian minister of foreign affairs Franco Frattini complained that each initiative, even symbolic ones gave the impression that division was not useful to Europe. He also said that he always found these "directorates" unsatisfactory and even if they had asked Italy to participate they would have said no, as they "can't support solutions that others found unacceptable. Frattini also had some doubts that the major themes on which France, Germany and the United Kingdom had "divergent views" could be resolved in an intense working day. Frattini said that Italy was the third largest contributor (net) to the EU budget and that he supported Europe finding the means for going forward as quickly as possible but that the rules according to which some of them went forward more quickly had to be established together.
