19/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the report by French Green member Yves Piétrasanta, the European Parliament approves, with an amendment, the modification to the 2001 regulation that provides for technical measures for conserving certain highly migratory fish stocks. The Parliament calls for the compulsory use of monofilament streamer lines on swivels in marlin longline fishing in order to allow blue and white marlin that are still alive to be released more easily. According to ICCAT, these two species of marlin are currently overfished, and the European Commission proposed to encourage the use of this kind of device. This measure would also make it easier to put sharks back in the water, sharks being a related species.
