EP calls on Commission for action plan for tuna

Strasbourg, 19/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - With the adoption of the own initiative report by Daniel Varela (EPP-ED, Spain) on tuna, the European Parliament invites the Commission to present proposals aimed at a specific action plan and an overall framework for the structural support of the tuna sector as well as a plan for the specific protection of the tuna sector against third countries. It calls on the Commission to examine the application of medium-term strategies that promote the competitiveness of the tuna sector as a whole and the possible application of a special Community register for the tuna fishing fleet.

With the adoption, moreover, of the report by Irish Green member Patricia McKenna, the European Parliament approved updating of the 2001 regulation on control measures adopted by the three regional fishing organisations concerning Atlantic tuna (ICCAT), Indian Ocean tuna (CTOI) and the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Association (IATTA)
