Eurochambres calls for speeding up employment reforms

Brussels, 15/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - On the eve of the Informal Social Council of Galway, the Association of European Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Eurochambres) is calling on Member States to speed up employment reforms and welfare systems. It is also calling for a rapid re-integration of under-25s onto the labour market. It is convinced that an environment that is supportive of enterprise, increases competition and productivity. Eurochambres is also requesting: more flexible labour regulations (flexible working hours, part time work); a rapid transformation of undeclared work into declared work; support for business creation to increase the level of self-employment; measures for an increased geographical and occupational mobility within the European Union; more compatibility of occupation and family by time-flexible, qualified, sufficient and affordable health care facilities for children and elderly people. The president of Eurocahmbres, Christopher Leitl called on ministers to "implement the measures proposed by the Commission in order to increase the labour supply and make work pay. He indicated out that the Commission "has recently clearly pointed out some crucial efforts required by Member States to remove barriers to the participation of the unemployed in the labour market".
