Intergroup calls for constitution before 1 May

Strasbourg, 15/01/2004 (Agence Europe) - The EP's European Constitution Intergroup met on 14 January to request that Heads of State and Governments of the EU adopt a European Constitution before enlargement on 1 May. The group asserted that "enlargement of the European Union would not be acceptable without deepening" and that in these conditions, "it would violate all promises of recent years that historical processes would be dealt with in parallel". Intergroup is calling on the European Parliament to insist, during the plenary on 29 January in Brussels that Heads of State and Government "come to an agreement on the last controversial points".

According to a press statement, Intergroup also discussed the possibility of the European Parliament to put pressure on governments that refuse to give their opinions on issues such as financial perspectives, revision of structural funds, new accession requests and the appointment of certain roles in the European institutions.
